Kusama is Polkadot's real-value canary network: a permissionless Layer 1 used to test runtime upgrades, on-chain governance, and parachain-related mechanics under live economic conditions. KSM is used for transaction fees, staking, governance, and coretime purchases, so Kusama is not a conventional zero-value testnet.

Its distinguishing feature is also its central risk: the network is intentionally experimental, and holders absorb the operational and governance consequences of that experimentation. KSM's inflation model sets annual inflation at 10%; it supports security and treasury funding, but leaves idle holders exposed to dilution.

Kusama remains technically relevant through the broader Polkadot SDK stack, but the investment case requires evidence that this technical role creates persistent demand for KSM rather than only validation for the Polkadot ecosystem.
