About Story
Analysis of 9 Jul 2026Story, now rebranded as DATA Foundation/DATA Network, is a purpose-built Layer 1 that started as programmable intellectual-property infrastructure and pivoted on June 25, 2026 toward licensed AI training-data provenance. The token migration is 1:1 from IP to DATA, so holders do not face a conversion haircut, but the market now judges the project on a different thesis: can it source, verify, license, and pay contributors for data used by AI companies?

CoinGecko shows DATA trading near $0.29 on July 8, 2026, with market cap near $103M, 360M circulating tokens, and an all-time high of $14.78 from September 21, 2025. That leaves the asset roughly 98% below peak even after the rebrand bounce.
The new stack centers on Trace, an on-chain registry for provenance and licensing records; Kled, a human-data marketplace reportedly bringing 1B+ to 1.5B user-contributed records; Poseidon, a quality-scoring and payment layer; and Confidential Data Rails (CDR), Story docs describe as threshold-encrypted data infrastructure using validator DKG keys, on-chain access control, and story-kernel TEEs. This is more focused than the earlier K-pop, K-drama, gaming, and broad IP licensing pitch, but it is also a reset.
The project still has strong venture history with a16z and Polychain, CDR technical depth, and a real AI-data compliance problem to target. It also has thin public revenue evidence, prior PIP Labs staff reductions, a co-founder departure, and a delayed Aug 13, 2026 unlock that can pressure liquidity before the new model proves demand.
