Neutron is a permissionless smart contract platform built on the Cosmos SDK that enables cross-chain decentralized applications through the Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol. Originally launched in June 2023 with Interchain Security from the Cosmos Hub, Neutron transitioned to full sovereignty in April 2025 with its Mercury upgrade, achieving 100ms latency, 11x throughput improvements, and native NTRN staking.

The platform uses CosmWasm, a high-performance WebAssembly virtual machine for Rust-based smart contracts, combined with advanced cross-chain capabilities including Interchain Queries (ICQ) and Interchain Accounts (ICA). Neutron pioneered the Bitcoin DeFi narrative through its Bitcoin Summer campaign, launching maxBTC, a yield-bearing Bitcoin token providing 5-10% base APY, which reached $50M+ in peak TVL.
In December 2025, the ecosystem suffered a setback when the Mars Protocol exploit drained $973K in USDC from lenders, leading to a network service halt until March 2026 for security hardening. The Neutron Foundation responded with a relief program that reimbursed 96.48% of affected users, demonstrating strong governance.
With a fixed supply of 1 billion NTRN tokens and a deflationary fee mechanism where 75% of NTRN-denominated fees are burned, the project maintains sound long-term tokenomics. The token has experienced a dramatic 99.8% decline from its February 2024 all-time high of $1.97 to current levels around $0.003, though developer activity increased 40% from Q4 2025 to Q1 2026 and transaction throughput hit record levels.
