How to Do Crypto Fundamental Analysis: The STRICT Guide

Learn how to do crypto fundamental analysis with the six-pillar STRICT framework, primary on-chain sources, and worked examples for Aave, BTC, and RUNE.

Última atualização

Crypto fundamental analysis evaluates whether a blockchain network or protocol can fund its operations, ship verified code, earn organic fees, and protect holders from dilution. Instead of reacting to short-term price charts, a disciplined researcher inspects primary on-chain records, code repositories, governance forums, and supply schedules across the six pillars of the STRICT methodology: Sustainability, Transparency, Revenue, Innovation, Community, and Tokenomics.

How Does the Six-Pillar STRICT Research Process Work?

A repeatable crypto fundamental analysis process relies on fixed criteria so your standards do not drift with market narratives. Under the STRICT scoring methodology, every asset is rated across six pillars whose initials spell STRICT: Sustainability, Transparency, Revenue, Innovation, Community, and Tokenomics.

For each pillar, the research step records a rating from 0 to 10 in the coin's input set with a written rationale and third-party source URLs. Published reports print that rating times 10 on a 0 to 100 scale. A report never cites a page of this site as a source; each pillar page tallies the third-party domains cited across coin input sets.

The engine reads one weight table across nine sector profiles: Monetary, Network protocol, Financial protocol, Technical infrastructure, Payments and RWA, Adoption-led, Stable asset, Derivative, and Balanced. The six weights in each profile add up to 1.00. The engine multiplies each pillar rating by its sector weight, sums the products, divides by the weights in use, and rounds to a whole number from 0 to 100. Every asset also carries a separate Risk score from 1 to 10 that enters the engine signal and with risk flags for hazards such as regulatory, bridge, security, and liquidity exposure.

Step 1: Evaluate Sustainability and Operational Runway

Sustainability is the S of STRICT and asks whether a project can keep operating and funding itself for years. Across the nine sector profiles, its weight runs from 0.16 in Adoption-led to 0.28 in Stable asset, sitting at 0.20 in Financial protocol and 0.26 in Monetary.

Dica

Verify treasury balances and active loan or reserve durability on DeFiLlama and in official protocol documentation rather than trusting self-reported summaries.

In crypto fundamental analysis, Sustainability weighs three evaluation factors:

  1. Treasury Health: Operational runway at current burn rate, diversification beyond native token holdings, and public treasury reporting.
  2. Funding and Backing: Disclosed funding rounds, quality and reputation of institutional backers, and vesting schedules that prevent dumps.
  3. Battle-Tested Resilience: Network uptime history, response to past security incidents or exploits, and recovery through previous bear markets.

Primary sources to read are protocol docs, treasury dashboards, DeFiLlama (abre em uma nova aba) for total value locked (TVL) and loan depth, GitHub (abre em uma nova aba) for consensus code, and CoinGecko (abre em uma nova aba) for market and supply data. As of 2026-10-22, StrictScore's input set scores Pendle 78 out of 100 on Sustainability (83 STRICT, 6/10 Risk, tier-1 liquidity, positive regulatory status). It records a dominant share in DeFi yield-splitting and fixed-rate markets and daily protocol trading peaks of $158 million to $159 million in October 2026. DeFiLlama's Pendle page (abre em uma nova aba) is one of the sources it cites for the pillar, and it is where you can check current volume yourself.

Step 2: Audit Transparency, Governance, and Reporting

Transparency is the first T of STRICT and asks whether outsiders can see and check what the team and the protocol do. Across the nine sector profiles, Transparency weighs from 0.12 in Monetary and Adoption-led to 0.24 in Stable asset, and 0.16 in Financial protocol.

Dica

Read recent proposals on the protocol governance forum and inspect commit and release history directly on GitHub to confirm that passed votes match deployed code.

Auditing Transparency in crypto fundamental analysis covers three evaluation factors:

  1. Team Identity and Credentials: Disclosed team members with verifiable identities, relevant crypto or tech track records, and active public engagement.
  2. Governance Structure: Documented governance processes, active voter participation, and a track record of implementing passed proposals.
  3. Communication and Reporting: Frequent development updates, a regularly updated public roadmap, and candid communication during incidents or setbacks.

Primary sources to read are open-source repositories on GitHub (abre em uma nova aba), verified contracts on Etherscan (for example the Aave token contract (abre em uma nova aba)), governance forums such as the Aave governance forum (abre em uma nova aba), protocol docs such as Pendle's docs (abre em uma nova aba), and regulator registers. As of 2026-10-22, StrictScore's input set scores Pendle 82 out of 100 on Transparency, citing its open-source smart contracts, public security audits, vePENDLE revenue dashboards, and documented implied-yield oracle feeds for Aave. The Pendle GitHub organization (abre em uma nova aba) is where to check the open-source claim.

Step 3: Verify Protocol Revenue and Value Capture

Revenue is the R of STRICT and asks whether the protocol earns real fees or income from use. Across the nine sector profiles, Revenue weighs from 0.00 in Monetary up to 0.24 in Financial protocol, where it is the heaviest pillar.

Dica

Separate user-paid protocol fees from inflationary token emissions on DeFiLlama, and check whether the asset is a store of value where the Revenue pillar does not apply.

A rigorous crypto fundamental analysis separates organic user fees from token inflation across three Revenue evaluation factors:

  1. Protocol Revenue Generation: Total fees generated from usage, revenue growth trajectory, and fee distribution across burns, stakers, or treasury.
  2. Business Model Sustainability: Revenue covering operational costs without token emissions, user-holder incentive alignment, and a defensible moat.
  3. Value Accrual to Token Holders: Share of revenue reaching holders, active buybacks or revenue sharing, and staking rewards funded by real fees.

Primary sources to read are DeFiLlama's fee and revenue trackers (abre em uma nova aba), on-chain fee collectors, buyback governance proposals, and fee documentation. As of 2026-10-22, StrictScore's input set scores Pendle 79 out of 100 on Revenue. It records automated market maker swap fees on Principal and Yield Token trades plus a 5% fee on all Yield Token yield, and notes the October 2026 launch of PendleLoop and PAXGy gold pools. Check current figures on the DeFiLlama Pendle tracker (abre em uma nova aba).

Step 4: Measure Technical Innovation and Shipping Cadence

Innovation is the I of STRICT and asks whether the technology is being built and shipped, and whether it matters. Across the nine sector profiles, Innovation weighs from 0.08 in Stable asset to 0.26 in Technical infrastructure, with Network protocol at 0.24, Financial protocol at 0.16, and Monetary at 0.12.

Dica

Check tagged releases, pull requests, and technical documentation on GitHub to confirm that roadmap milestones are shipping into production.

To evaluate Innovation in crypto fundamental analysis, check three factor groups:

  1. Technology Uniqueness: Novel consensus mechanisms or architectures, measurable gains in speed, cost, or scalability, and solutions to scalability bottlenecks.
  2. Development Activity: Frequency and quality of GitHub commits, active contributors and core developers, and regular releases and upgrades.
  3. Competitive Advantages: Unique capabilities others lack, technical or network-effect barriers to competition, and distinct market positioning.

Primary sources to read are GitHub repositories (abre em uma nova aba), signed release tags (Bitcoin Core 31.1 release tag (abre em uma nova aba)), and technical specifications in developer docs (Pendle docs (abre em uma nova aba)). As of 2026-10-22, StrictScore's input set scores Pendle 94 out of 100 on Innovation. It records time-decaying automated market makers for Principal and Yield Tokens, and PendleLoop (leveraged yield and tokenized equity loops via Aave V4) and Aave implied-yield risk feeds shipped in October 2026. Compare those claims with the Pendle GitHub (abre em uma nova aba) release history.

Step 5: Assess Community Adoption and Ecosystem Durability

Community is the C of STRICT and asks who uses, builds, and holds the asset, and how durable that base is. Across the nine sector profiles, Community weighs from 0.10 in Financial protocol to 0.26 in Adoption-led, and 0.24 in Monetary.

Dica

Focus on verifiable governance turnout, institutional filings, and protocol integrations instead of raw social media follower counts.

In crypto fundamental analysis, Community weighs three factor groups:

  1. User Adoption Metrics: Daily active users and unique addresses, transaction volume and frequency, and growth in new wallet addresses.
  2. Ecosystem Development: Number and quality of applications built on the protocol, active ecosystem developers, and strategic partnerships and integrations.
  3. Community Engagement: Social following and engagement quality, community events, hackathons, and meetups, and user retention and churn rates.

Primary sources to read include governance forums (Aave governance (abre em uma nova aba)), regulator filings (SEC press release 2025-101 (abre em uma nova aba)), contributor graphs on GitHub (abre em uma nova aba), integration listings on DeFiLlama (abre em uma nova aba), and spot volume data on CoinGecko (abre em uma nova aba). As of 2026-10-22, StrictScore's input set scores Pendle 77 out of 100 on Community. It records an active vePENDLE governance ecosystem, $56.43 million in 24-hour spot volume, and integrations with Aave, Morpho, Ethena, and Paxos Labs (PAXGy). That volume is a snapshot from the analysis date; the CoinGecko page (abre em uma nova aba) shows the current figure.

Step 6: Inspect Tokenomics, Supply Caps, and Dilution

Tokenomics is the final T of STRICT and asks whether supply, issuance, and unlocks protect holders from dilution. Across the nine sector profiles, Tokenomics weighs from 0.14 in Balanced, Financial protocol, Network protocol, and Technical infrastructure up to 0.26 in Monetary.

Dica

Compare circulating supply against maximum supply on CoinGecko and verify token contract balances on Etherscan before relying on any tokenomics figure.

An audit of Tokenomics, which you can expand with our guide to evaluating tokenomics, checks three factor groups:

  1. Supply Mechanics: Maximum supply cap and inflation rate, declining emission schedules, and token unlock and vesting periods.
  2. Token Utility: Governance voting power, staking requirements for network participation or rewards, and fee payment or service access.
  3. Distribution Fairness: Initial allocation across team, investors, and community, insider vesting schedules, and top-holder concentration.

Primary sources to read are token contracts on Etherscan (for example the Aave token contract (abre em uma nova aba)), protocol supply rules (Bitcoin vocabulary (abre em uma nova aba) and Pendle docs (abre em uma nova aba)), and supply schedules on CoinGecko (abre em uma nova aba). As of 2026-10-22, StrictScore's input set scores Pendle 91 out of 100 on Tokenomics. It records all team and investor vesting schedules as 100% unlocked, about 174.1 million PENDLE circulating, and vePENDLE lockers capturing swap and yield fees. CoinGecko (abre em uma nova aba) shows the current circulating supply.

Worked Example: Applying All Six STRICT Pillars to Aave

Applying all six pillars to Aave shows how crypto fundamental analysis produces an auditable score from primary documents. As of 2026-10-18, StrictScore's input set for Aave (symbol AAVE, sector DeFi, Financial protocol profile) gives it a STRICT score of 89 out of 100 (previous score 89) and a Risk score of 3 out of 10, with zero risk flags, tier-1 liquidity, and positive regulatory status. Each bullet below states what StrictScore's input set records for that pillar; the links name the third-party sources the input set cites for the pillar, not pages that each show the exact figure. Readers new to lending pools can pair this walkthrough with our DeFi basics guide.

The six products sum to 88.78 over an applied weight of 1.00, rounding to Aave's published STRICT score of 89 on 2026-10-18.

How Does the STRICT Score Treat Bitcoin When Revenue Is Null?

Store-of-value assets such as Bitcoin are monetary networks rather than fee-charging businesses, so they do not receive a Revenue rating. Under the STRICT methodology null-pillar rule, a pillar that does not apply is marked N/A with its reason and removed from the mean, never scored as zero. When a removed pillar has a positive profile weight, the remaining weights renormalize and the report prints the applied weight below 1.00.

For Bitcoin (2026-10-15 analysis, STRICT score 92, previous score 92, Risk 2/10, tier-1 liquidity, positive regulatory status, one regulatory risk flag), the Store of Value sector uses the Monetary profile, where Revenue weighs 0.00. Removing Bitcoin's null Revenue pillar keeps the applied weight across the five scored pillars at 1.00, so nothing is renormalized:

The five products sum to 91.50 over an applied weight of 1.00, rounding to Bitcoin's published STRICT score of 92 on 2026-10-15.

Why a Decent Overall Score Still Needs the Risk Read: The THORChain Case

A composite score can mask severe tail risk when strong technology and supply rules average out post-exploit damage. As of 2026-10-03, StrictScore's input set gives THORChain (symbol RUNE, sector DeFi) a STRICT score of 62 out of 100 (down from 69). Two pillars remain high: Innovation scores 80 (native cross-chain swaps without wrapped assets remain differentiated despite a GG20 signing-layer failure) and Tokenomics scores 70 (RUNE keeps pool and node-bonding utility, and recovery reporting indicates the exploit losses were absorbed without minting new RUNE or directly diluting holders). Transparency sits at 60 (an incident report was published, though a reported researcher dispute over a pre-exploit disclosure limits confidence in remediation governance), while Sustainability, Revenue, and Community sit at 55 each after swaps and liquidity actions were halted for more than five weeks, leaving post-restart liquidity, fee durability, and user trust recovery unproven.

Reading 62 out of 100 without the Risk score misses the decisive warning in crypto fundamental analysis: as of 2026-10-03, THORChain carries a 9 out of 10 Risk score, four risk flags (regulatory, bridge, security incident, and low liquidity), tier-3 exchange depth, and negative regulatory status. The THORChain exploit report (abre em uma nova aba) puts the May 15 exploit loss at about $10.7 million. StrictScore's input set records core operations halted for more than five weeks (analysis dated 2026-10-03), and The Defiant (abre em uma nova aba) reports that trading resumed after a month-long halt. Under the STRICT methodology, Risk does not alter the STRICT score, but it enters the engine signal, and a Risk of 7 or more caps the 12-month probability at 65%. Pair every score read with our crypto due diligence checklist.

Pró: High Score With Low Risk (Aave and Bitcoin)

Aave pairs an 89 STRICT score with a 3/10 Risk rating and zero risk flags (2026-10-18), while Bitcoin pairs a 92 STRICT score with a 2/10 Risk rating and continuous operation since January 2009 without a central issuer (2026-10-15).

Contra: Decent Score With High Risk (THORChain)

THORChain holds a 62 STRICT score, with 80 Innovation and 70 Tokenomics offset by 55 on Sustainability, Revenue, and Community, and carries a 9/10 Risk score and four risk flags after a $10.7M exploit and a halt of more than five weeks (2026-10-03).

What a Fundamental Score Cannot Answer

Even rigorous crypto fundamental analysis cannot resolve four portfolio decisions:

  • Price and valuation: A high STRICT score measures protocol quality, not whether today's market price already discounts that strength.
  • Entry timing: Strong fundamentals do not prevent short-term drawdowns during macro liquidity shocks or market-wide deleveraging.
  • Position size: Allocation size depends on portfolio correlation and venue depth, such as tier-1 liquidity for Aave (2026-10-18), Bitcoin (2026-10-15), and Pendle (2026-10-22) versus tier-3 liquidity for THORChain (2026-10-03).
  • Your own risk tolerance: No composite rating knows your maximum acceptable drawdown, time horizon, or regulatory constraints.
